The NBA playoff format can be confusing, especially with the play-in tournament added in 2021. Here is a complete breakdown of how the NBA postseason works, from the play-in to the Finals.

The play-in tournament

The play-in tournament involves the 7th through 10th seeds in each conference. The 7th and 8th seeds play each other — the winner gets the 7th seed. The 9th and 10th seeds play — the loser is eliminated. Then the loser of the 7-8 game plays the winner of the 9-10 game for the 8th seed.

The play-in has been controversial since its introduction. Stars like LeBron James have criticized it, arguing that teams shouldn't have to fight for a playoff spot after playing 82 regular-season games. But the NBA loves it because it keeps more teams competitive late in the season, which means more meaningful games and higher TV ratings.

Seeding and home court

The top 6 seeds in each conference are determined by regular-season record. The 7th and 8th seeds come from the play-in tournament. In the first round, it's 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, and 4 vs 5. The higher seed has home-court advantage in every round.

Home-court advantage matters. Over the last 10 years, the home team has won 63% of playoff games. In a seven-game series, having four home games (Games 1, 2, 5, and 7) is a significant edge.

The four rounds

The NBA playoffs consist of four rounds, all best-of-seven: First Round, Conference Semifinals, Conference Finals, and the NBA Finals. A team needs to win 16 games to win the championship — four series of four wins each. The entire playoff run takes about two months, from mid-April to mid-June.

Conference vs overall seeding

The NBA still uses conference-based seeding, meaning the Eastern and Western Conference brackets are separate until the Finals. There's been debate about switching to a 1-16 format based on overall record, which would create better matchups but eliminate the traditional East vs West structure. For now, the conference format remains.

Key dates for 2026

The 2026 play-in tournament is scheduled for April 14-17. The first round begins April 19. The Conference Finals start in late May, and the NBA Finals begin in early June. Mark your calendars — the best basketball of the year is coming.
